Swim lesson Levels

Levels are based on BOTH Age and Ability.

(Ages 1-3 years old)

Sea urchin

Familiarize children between the ages of 1 year to 3 years with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. 
 

Skills introduced include:

  • Holds
  • Water exploration
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Submerging
  • Floating
  • Gliding
  • Arm action
  • Kicking breaststroke

Preschool

(Ages 3-5 years old)

Seahorse

Swimmers have little or no experience with the water. Swimmers will be comfortably oriented to the water and taught basic pool safety.

 

Skills taught include:

  • Submerging the face
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Bobbing underwater
  • Assisted front and back floating
  • Kicking on front and back
  • Assisted front and back gliding.

Sea Star

Swimmers are able to perform all of the skills in Seahorse.

 

Swimmers will learn to:

  • Independently float on their front and back
  • Independently glide on their front and back
  • Glide on their front and back while kicking
  • Retrieve objects underwater
  • Front and back crawl for at least 5 yards
  • Roll over from front to back and back to front in the water
  • Jump into the pool and level off from a vertical to horizontal position.

Learn To Swim

(Ages 6-14 years old)

Clown Fish

Swimmers are able to perform all of the skills in Otter.

Swimmers will learn to:

  • Independently float on their front and back
  • Independently glide on their front and back
  • Glide on their front and back while kicking

  • Front and back crawl for at least 5 yards
  • Roll over from front to back and back to front in the water

Seal

Swimmers are able to perform all of the skills in Clown Fish.

Swimmers will learn to:

  • Tread water
  • Glide on their front and back for 10 yards
  • Elementary backstroke
  • Kneeling and compact dives.

Swordfish

Swimmers are able to perform all the skills in Seal.

Swimmers will:

  • Further working on their skills from Seal
  • Work on building endurance by swimming:
    • Freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards
    • Elementary backstroke for 10 yards
    • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Learn "side-breathing," breaststroke
  • The standing dive.

Shark

Swimmers are able to perform all the skills in Swordfish.

 

Swimmers will:

  • Learn to side-breathe on both sides
  • Swim
    • Breaststroke (10 yards)
    • Sidestroke (10 yards)
    • Underwater for 3 body lengths
    • Elementary backstroke (15 yards)
    • Dolphin kick (10 yards)
    • Freestyle and backstroke (50 yards
  • Swimmers will also learn
    • Flip turns
    • Diving on the starting blocks
    • Feet-first surface diving.

adult lessons

(Ages 14 and up)

learning the basics

No prerequisites. Learn to be safe in and around the water and introduce Front and Back crawl and breastroke.

improving skills and swimming strokes

Must be comfortable in chest deep water, put face in the water and swim front and back crawl and breastroke for 15 yards. Will work on improving technique in all 6 swim strokes and help others in an aquatic emergency.

swimming for fitness

Must be able to swim front and back crawl 25 yards and breastroke 15 yards. Will work on refining stroke and building endurance and introducing turns.
